In Mexico City the citizens are losing their sense of smell, the average time
spent in traffic every day is 2.5 hours, and 26 pedestrian are killed every day-
the city is facing tremendous challenges to turn itself around for more livable
and sustainable solutions.
The previous initiatives have been to build new infrastructure to accommodate
the growing need for car traffic. The Mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard has
set out a new direction, new efforts on public transport and bicycle infrastructure.
Gehl Architects have been asked by The Secretaria de Medio Ambiente del Districto
Federal (City of Mexico City, Environmental Department) to provide consultancy
services to advise on a transport improvement project establishing new bicycle
infrastructure in Mexico City. The current ambition is to establish a total of
300 km of new bicycle tracks over a period of four and a half years.
