Preparing Masterplans for Marston Vale
David Lock Associates are leading substantial multi disciplinary teams preparing the master plans and development strategies for two of the shortlisted Eco-towns. Working with the landowner, O&H Properties Ltd, the proposals being developed for the Marston Vale Eco-town in Bedfordshire are highly innovative delivering a unique vision for a truly sustainable new community.
The proposals are defined by the sites existing topographic, landscape, settlement
and movement patterns. Seeking to interlink existing lakes with a network of canals
and wetlands, establish increased woodland cover, increase bio-diversity and provide
opportunities for local food production. The Marston Vale Eco-town proposals seek to deliver some 15,000 houses associated
with a diverse range of uses forming the backbone of the new community. Key urban design principles underpin the proposals in terms of:
- The design approach; a series of neighbourhoods unified within a landscape framework
within which lakes, canals and wetlands are dominant features and conduits of
movement.
- Integrating and connecting to existing settlements.
- The development of community, sustainability and economic viability.
- Promotion; we have developed new and exciting graphic and communication techniques.
“The Marston Vale is a landscape in transition – moving from a despoiled, post-industrial
era and embracing a rural renaissance. The potential of the Marston Vale is yet to be uncovered. Lying between Bedford and Milton Keynes, it has excellent strategic connections
yet few environmental constraints. The creation of an Eco-Town in the Marston Vale will complete the regeneration
of the area and will be an exemplar of a truly sustainable community.”
