Learning other cities to develop light rail
By Arne Colliander, BT
City of Bergen has become a leading majority within light rail development. The
recent success of the newly developed light rail system from Nesttun towards the
city centre of Bergen has for several years been a discussable investment to reduce
pollution, reduce car use and increase environmental awareness. It has proved
to be of great success and more frequently used then anticipated.
Nine Nordic cities including Stavanger, Ålborg, Århus, Copenhagen, Helsingborg,
Lund, Malmø, Åbo and Tammerfors are looking to Bergen to learn from their experiences.
Technical Chief for the City Tram in Bergen, Tom Potter says that in Copenhagen
their is an aim to build a tram system as a supplement to the existing metro.
The city tram will stop in eleven municipalities. During spring a delegation of
45 officials are coming to Bergen to experience first hand what the city has done.
