Colin Buchanan and Partners Ltd was founded in 1964 around the team that produced the seminal “Traffic in Towns” report. Commissioned by the UK Minister of Transport, this document is widely regarded as the starting point of modern transportation planning. It recognised both the benefits of the “go-anywhere self powered machine for transport and personal locomotion”, as well as the threat posed by the car to urban and rural environments. Importantly, it also demonstrated that most transport issues could not be solved by transport analysis alone, but demanded wider analysis employing a variety of disciplines.
