Robert Cowan is director of the UK’s Urban Design Group. He is also a consultant and editor of Context, the journal of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation. He is the author of The Dictionary of Urbanism, Re:urbanism (with Kelvin Campbell); Urban Design Guidance; Placecheck; The Connected City; The Cities Design Forgot; London After Dark (with the photographer Alan Delaney); government design guides for England (By Design, with Kelvin Campbell) and Scotland (Designing Places); and a housing design guide for Scotland (Housing Quality). He originated the Placecheck method of community urban design appraisal with the Urban Design Alliance.
