Beyond Green

Sustainable development is a tough agenda that people tend to think of as someone else´s job. They help people to treat sustainability as an integral part of what they do. Their aim is to help make the ideal practical, working in close partnership with clients and their stakeholders to translate what once seemed like wishful thinking into tangible programmes and achievements.

Jonathan Smales
Group Chief Executive

Biography: As one of the most experienced and effective sustainability strategists and practitioners in the UK, Jonathan has spent over 20 years working in sustainability. Last five years he has researched and written the sustainable development strategy for both the Housing Corporation and CABE, helped found the government´s climate change communications initiative and conducted major regeneration and placemaking projects. Trained as a geographer and civil servant, he as managing Director and international trustee for Greenpeace (1986-90) he led a period of sustained growth; helping to build unprecedented awareness of and support for its campaigns, and establishing financial and brand strength as the Greenpeace membership base grew from 50 000 to nearly 400 000. In 1990 he found the Earth Centre charitable trust to design and build a GBP60 million sustainability centre on an ecologically reclaimed 400-acre colliery site in Yorkshire. The Earth Centre was a pioneer of much of the sustainable design promoted today and gave opportunities to people and companies that became acknowledged leaders in their fields.
